<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rotary damper that makes a gap small by a seal, when there is the gap between the upper face and/or the lower face of a vane and a surface opposing thereto. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A vane 5 includes a base 51 protruding from a shaft member 3, and a seal 52 provided between the base 51 and the inner peripheral face 1b of a body case 1. The seal 52 is extensible/contractible along the height direction of the base 51. When there is a gap between an upper face 521d of the seal 52 and a face 2a opposing to the upper face, if the vane 5 or a partition wall 4 is rotated with the shaft member 3 as center of rotation and the pressure of viscous liquid interposed between the base 51 and the seal 52 is increased, the seal 52 is extended by the pressure and the gap is eliminated.
