PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface coated cutting tool having a hard coating layer which exhibits excellent chipping resistance and wear resistance even in high-speed intermittent heavy cutting. SOLUTION: The surface coated cutting tool has, on a surface of its tool base, the hard coating layer comprising (a) a prime layer, (b) an intermediate layer, and (c) an upper layer, wherein: a Ti compound layer, a Zr-addedκ-type Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>layer with a trace amount of Zr added and with a layer thickness of 5 to 20 nm, and a Zr-addedα-type Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>layer with a trace amount of Zr added, which has a granular crystalline structure exhibiting high (0001), (10-10) face orientations, are formed by vapor deposition, as the prime layer, the intermediate layer, and the upper layer, respectively; and, as required, anα-type Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>layer having a columnar crystalline structure exhibiting a high (0001) face orientation is formed by vapor deposition as a lower layer between the prime layer and the intermediate layer.
