<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a subterranean start method for a middle-fold type master/slave shield machine for letting only the slave shield machine advance and excavate the ground in a stable condition by blocking a middle-fold interval section of the master shield machine being left in the ground and preventing the occurrence of water leakage inside the shield machine. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This subterranean start method for the middle-fold type master/slave shield machine comprises the processes for: anchoring a skin plate 14a of the master shield machine in a front barrel part of the shield machine in the ground around it after letting the shield machine 10 advance up to the predetermined position in the ground while excavating; separating a skin plate 16a of the slave shield machine in the front barrel part from the skin plate 14a of the master shield machine in the front barrel part; integrating the skin plate 16a of the slave shield machine in the front barrel part, a skin plate 14b of the master slave machine in a rear barrel part, and a skin plate 16b of the slave shield machine in the rear barrel part mutually to excavate the ground by the length equivalent to the section (s) of middle-fold interval; letting the shield machine 10 advance until a tip of the skin plate 14b of the master shield machine in the rear barrel part is abutted on a rear end of the skin plate 14a of the master shield machine in the front barrel part; and blocking the middle-fold interval section (s) in the skin plate 14 of the master shield machine.
