<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a production method of a polyester composition that gives a fiber exhibiting improved color depth and vividness when the fiber is dyed, and to provide the fiber. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The production method includes a step of producing an oligomer by esterification in an esterification tank from a dicarboxylic acid component essentially comprising terephthalic acid and a diol component essentially comprising ethylene glycol, and a step of polycondensation of the oligomer in a polycondensation tank. The method is characterized in that: in a middle stage of the production process, an alkali metal-containing phosphorus compound and/or an alkaline earth metal-containing phosphorus compound, prepared by reacting a phosphate with a compound containing an alkali metal and/or an alkaline earth metal, in a proportion with respect to one mole of the phosphate, 0.5 to 3 times of moles when a compound containing an alkali metal is used, and 0.25 to 1.5 times of moles, when a compound containing an alkaline earth metal is used, is added in such a manner that the content rate of the above compound ranges from 0.1 to 5.0 wt.% with respect to the whole weight of the polyester composition; also in any stage of the production process, an ammonium compound or an amine compound in a specified amount with respect to the whole moles of the dicarboxylic acid component is added to the esterification tank or the polycondensation tank; and the theoretical average polymerization degree of the oligomer fed to the polycondensation tank is not more than 5.
