PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a head cleaning device that can fully wipe off deposits such as ink with an extremely increased viscosity when they are stuck to a nozzle face and that can form a full meniscus, and also to provide an image forming apparatus using the device. SOLUTION: The head cleaning device 100 includes a foam element 105 that wipes the nozzle face 13b while dispersing the deposits F by bringing an impregnated cleaning solvent 104 into contact with the nozzle face 13b, an ultrasonic vibrator 107 that imparts ultrasonic vibration to the foam element 105, and a wiper blade 109 that wipes off the deposits by coming in slidable contact with the nozzle face 13b. After the nozzle face 13b is wiped with the foam element 105 to which ultrasonic vibration is imparted, the nozzle face 13b is wiped with the wiper blade 109. COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT
