PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recorder and an initialization method in the recorder, capable of relatively simply finishing initialization processing when the recorder is powered on, when power-off processing is normally finished, even in the case where a tray is shifted from a normal position after the recorder is powered off. SOLUTION: An abnormal finish flag is turned "OFF" when the power-off processing is normally finished. Then, in power-on processing, home seek processing is executed (S150), after tray-resetting to move the tray to a storage position (S140) if a state of the tray is abnormal (YES in S110), and a simplified rest flag is made "FALSE" (S160). An APG reset (S180) and an EJ frame reset (S190) are eliminated when the abnormal finish flag is "OFF" (YES in S170) and the simplified rest flag is "TRUE" (NO in S200), a PF reset (S210) is executed.
