<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a means for highly accurately calibrating a vertical location of a coating element at a low cost and in a simple structure. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In a coating method including a step of calibrating a vertical location of the discharge opening surface 2a of a coating element 2 having a slit- or hole-shaped discharge opening against a reference location set on the holding surface of a holding means 11 holding a member 9 to be coated, and a step of applying a coating liquid while the member to be coated held to the holding means and the coating element are relatively moved, the step of calibrating the vertical location of the coating element possesses at least a step of bringing the discharge opening surface or the surface adjacent to a length direction of the discharge opening surface into contact with the upper surface of a thickness criterion element set on the holding surface of the holding means or on the holding surface by descending the coating element toward the reference location while the coating element being held by a tare holding means 5, thus detecting the contact.
