The method involves using internal sensor data of vehicles (4, 6) and external sensor data that are provided by a sensor (10) as data for documentation of a traffic situation (2) in which the vehicle is involved. The data for an accident recorder of the vehicle are used for documentation of a traffic situation formed as an accident. The sensor data are exchanged between the vehicle and the device. The data are stored during a time interval that starts before starting of the traffic situation and ends after ending of the traffic situation. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for documentation of a traffic situation (2) a computer program with program code instructions for performing a method for documentation of a traffic situation (3) a computer program product with program code instructions for performing a method for documentation of a traffic situation.
