In a method of making cylindrical containers 1, e.g. cisterns, the container bottom 4 is made from plane austenitic steel plates which are welded together and welded to the container side wall 3. A reinforcing ring 6 is also welded to the walls in the vicinity of the bottom and the container is subjected to internal fluid pressure to stretch form the bottom to a cupped shape 4<SP>1</SP>. A further reinforcing ring 7 may be welded to the wall 3 if the top is to be similarly formed to a cupped shape 5<SP>1</SP>. The container rests on a foundation 2 which may be of steel or concrete. Alternatively, in the case of large containers, concentric concrete foundations (12), (13), Fig. 6 (not shown), may be used. For heat insulating purposes at either high or low temperatures, a stiffening member 15, which rests on a foundation ring 14, is welded to the container bottom. A reinforcing flange 6<SP>1</SP> may be required for the cold-stretching operation and it can be removed after cold-stretching is complete. |
