PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the following problems: when idle ejection is performed on a conveyance belt from a line-type recording head, cleaning of the conveyance belt is not sufficient, so that a heavy fluctuation in load may occur on the conveyance belt. SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus is equipped with: the conveyance belt 43 for conveying a paper sheet P; a recording head 51 for ejecting liquid droplets onto the paper sheet P; a main control section 501 having an idle ejection control means that controls ejection of liquid droplets not contributing to forming of an image onto the conveyance belt 43 from the recording head 51; and a cleaning device 10 for cleaning the liquid droplets ejected on the conveyance belt 43. The cleaning device 10 is equipped with a cleaning member 68 movable in a direction perpendicular to a belt movement direction of the conveyance belt 43. The idle ejection control means controls the ejection in such a manner that liquid droplets are ejected from each of nozzles of the recording head 51 at a timing of forming an idle ejection image DL in which a plurality of liquid droplets ejected on the conveyance belt 43 are arranged in a line inclined with respect to the belt movement direction.
