<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent failures caused by dripping of a liquid that is not attached to a recording medium, resulting in entry of the liquid to an unnecessary part, by preventing a toner-fixing liquid from being attached to any parts other than the recording material. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The fixing device uses a toner-fixing liquid formed from a softening agent that softens toner and a solvent that solves or disperses the softening agent. The fixing device sprays the toner-fixing liquid and fixes the unfixed toner on the recording material 21 to this material. Such a fixing device 30 includes a spraying width-varying means 50 configured such that the width within which the toner-fixing liquid is sprayed in a direction orthogonal to the conveyance direction B of the recording material is varied according to the size of a recording material to be used. The spraying width varying means is provided with, for example, a spray opening 51a through which the toner-fixing liquid is passed.
