<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and a method for removing aberrations from a light beam. <P>SOLUTION: The custom phase plate 10 for a light beam of a wavelength "λ" includes a plastic sheet material having a base refractive index "n<SB>0</SB>". A plurality of contiguous spots having different refractive indices are formed on a surface of the sheet material. Then, the spots establish a diffraction pattern for removing optical aberrations from a light beam. Specifically, each spot has a selected optical path difference (OPD) relative to the base refractive index (n<SB>0</SB>) that is equal to kλ/10 (for k=1 to 10). Further, the OPD for each spot in the pattern is individually established by heating the plastic material with a laser beam of ultra-short pulses. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT |
