<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a washing machine having cloth amount detection means capable of accurately detecting a cloth amount inside a drum. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The washing machine includes a motor 7 for rotationally driving the drum, a motor rotation number detection means 30 for detecting the rotation number of the motor 7, and a control portion 31 for controlling the rotation of the motor 7. The control portion 31 controls a first detection step of supplying a command rotation number to the motor 7, making the motor generate fixed acceleration torque by applying a voltage according to the rotation number of the motor, accelerating the rotation of the drum, and measuring the time t1 during which the rotation number increases by ΔN1 and a second detection step of applying a prescribed DC voltage to the motor 7 after the first detection step, decelerating the rotation of the drum and measuring the time t2 during which the rotation number lowers by ΔN2, and detects the cloth amount on the basis of an angular acceleration α1 during acceleration and an angular acceleration α2 during deceleration obtained from them.
