<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus enriched in practical usefulness, performing fast opening/closing of a shutter of a reader even without using any particular driving source. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A reader (17) including a shutter (28) to be opened/closed for a read window (17a) is packaged in a carriage (1). When the carriage (1) is in the vicinity of its home position and is moved in an interval direction, a part of the shutter (28) is abutted on a slope of an abutting member (26) in a ridge shape and opening/closing of the shutter (28) is switched by the abutment.
