<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fault detection apparatus and a method which reliably increase accuracy of detecting a fault of an actuator without being influenced by an individual difference among actuators, operating conditions, ambient temperature, deterioration with time, or the like, and also improve the safety of each actuator. <P>SOLUTION: A current in a steady state and a current in a transient state of a current value to be supplied to an actuator 6 are defined as a normal current component and an abnormal current component, respectively. The abnormal current component is calculated by subtracting the normal current component from the current value.
