PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydrogelling agent having a new chemical structure and a hydrogel. SOLUTION: A benzamide derivative combined with an ethylene glycol oligomer or polymer derivative is represented by formula (1) (wherein X is OH or NH<SB>2</SB>; k is an integer of 0-4; m is an integer from 1, preferably from 7 to 100; n is an integer from 1, preferably from 2 to 6; R<SB>1</SB>is O(CH<SB>2</SB>)<SB>p</SB>CH<SB>3</SB>; R<SB>2</SB>is O(CH<SB>2</SB>)<SB>q</SB>CH<SB>3</SB>; R<SB>3</SB>is H or O(CH<SB>2</SB>)<SB>r</SB>CH<SB>3</SB>; p is an integer from 9, preferably from 11 to 17; q is an integer from 9, preferably from 11 to 17; and r is an integer from 0 to 16 and smaller than p and smaller than q). The hydrogelling agent includes the compound represented by formula (1) as active ingredient. The hydrogel includes the benzamide derivative represented by formula (1) and water.
