<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a slide image data forming apparatus, capable of automatically forming slide image data obtained by photographing the necessary part of a sample by a microscope, at a high speed. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The slide image data forming apparatus includes: a camera 11 attached to the microscope 10; sample-conveying mechanisms 21 to 27 holding a slide glass 17 and moving in a three-dimensional direction; and a personal computer 13 that controls the camera 11, while successively moving the sample in X, Y and Z axis directions; captures a plurality of high-magnification images; forms thumbnail information of the plurality of images and stores the thumbnail information in a single file. It is allowable to provide an external digital camera 12. Thus, the microscope image can be captured at a high speed, and the image data are stored in one file; and it is not necessary to open many image files for data processing upon reading the data. A large amount of memory is not required, and high-speed processing and display can be made. Additionally, the three-dimensional structure of the sample can be discriminated.
