A method of monitoring an oil production tank comprises programming a processor to initiate an alarm signal if any one of the following relationships is determined by the processor: the combined production level is a predetermined distance from the water level; the water level is a predetermined level; the water level is decreasing while concurrently the combined production level and the water level is decreasing; and the water level remains stagnant for a predetermined time interval while concurrently the distance between the combined production level and the water level remains stagnant over the predetermined time interval.
