PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus and an imaging method for improving detection accuracy of a focus position, in focus control. SOLUTION: The imaging apparatus includes: a main subject image decision section 126 which decides at least one main subject image, on the basis of a contrast value in an image signal, in one or a plurality of areas of an imaging surface, during the focus control; a focus position detection section 126 which detects the focus position of a focus lens when the main subject image is focused on the imaging surface, by the peak value of the contrast value; a focus control section 126 which controls the first drive of the focus lens deciding the main subject image and the second drive of the focus lens detecting the focus position by driving only a range near the peak value of the contrast value corresponding to the main subject image; and an exposure control section 124 which controls exposure on the basis of brightness information by the image signal of at least one area including the main subject image among the plurality of areas of the imaging surface, during the second drive.
