<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide technology accurately judging fuel property even when an abnormality of an EGR valve occurs in a fuel property judgment device for an internal combustion engine. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The fuel property judgment device for the internal combustion engine includes an EGR passage and the EGR valve, judges abnormality of the EGR valve based on output value of a pressure sensor of intake air sucked in the internal combustion engine, and judges fuel properties based on knocking ignition timing of the internal combustion engine avoiding knocking of the internal combustion engine. In the fuel property judgment device, an operation line of the internal combustion engine is shifted to a heavy load side before judgment of fuel properties, and operation state of the internal combustion engine is controlled into a state in which fuel property judgment is not easily affected by EGR gas if abnormality of the EGR valve is judged.
