PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an exposure start timing determining method capable of easily and accurately adjusting a transfer position on a recording medium, and to provide an image forming apparatus that applies the method. SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus 1 is configured so that when a paper fed from a paper feeding tray 11 or a manual tray 15 and conveyed by a conveying mechanism 20 via a feeder part 10 passes through a process part 60, a toner image on a photoreceptive drum 8, exposed with LED light emitted from an LED part 50 and developed by an image forming unit 31, is transferred to the paper. At this time, the control part of the image forming apparatus 1 determines the timing of starting exposure (exposure start timing) by the LED part 50, according to the source of the paper to which the toner image is transferred by the process part 60. Accordingly, the error of the photoreceptor arrival time caused by the change of a conveying path is absorbed, and deviation of a transfer start position due to error is suppressed.
