摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new and stable liquid-crystalline or mesogenic compound having highly negative DC(dielectric constant) anisotropy and suitable as a component of a liquid crystal medium, to provide such a liquid crystal medium, and to provide optical and electro-optical display devices. SOLUTION: The compound is a new fluorinated fluorene derivative having negative dielectric constant anisotropy, being represented by formula 1: R<SP>1</SP>-(-A<SP>1</SP>-Z<SP>1</SP>-)<SB>k1</SB>-(A<SP>2</SP>-Z<SP>2</SP>-)<SB>k2</SB>-W-(-Z<SP>3</SP>-A<SP>3</SP>-)<SB>k3</SB>-(-Z<SP>4</SP>-A<SP>4</SP>)<SB>k4</SB>-R<SP>2</SP>[wherein W is partial formula (2) (wherein L<SP>1</SP>and L<SP>2</SP>are each independently H, F, Cl, -CH<SB>2</SB>F, -CHF<SB>2</SB>or -CF<SB>3</SB>, provided that L<SP>1</SP>and L<SP>2</SP>are not H at the same time, and that L<SP>3</SP>and L<SP>4</SP>are each independently H or F); and R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, A<SP>1</SP>, A<SP>2</SP>, A<SP>3</SP>, A<SP>4</SP>, Z<SP>1</SP>, Z<SP>2</SP>, Z<SP>3</SP>, Z<SP>4</SP>, k1, k2, k3 and k4 have each a predetermined meaning].
