<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backlight unit with deformation prevented of a diffraction grating of a light guide plate, and a liquid crystal display loading the same. <P>SOLUTION: If projections PJ are located at a top face 11U where the diffraction grating DG is arranged in a light guide plate 11, a diffusion sheet 15 covering the top face 11U is supported by the projections PJ.
