<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily take in and out a document to a placing table, while preventing a collision between a pickup roller and the other member, without providing a means for detecting the position of the pickup roller. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The content of initial operation of the pickup roller 30 on a power supply or jam release, is changed in response to whether or not the document is placed on the document placing table 11. When the document is not placed on the document placing table 11, the pickup roller 30 is sufficiently lowered, and then, is lifted by a predetermined distance H1, and the pickup roller 30 is positioned at an initial position.
