<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase braking force without excessively increasing the force of holding a paper pipe during braking, in a package brake which is applied to an automatic winder and gives the braking force to a winding package. Ž<P>SOLUTION: First acting force (f1) directed forward to the paper pipe 21 and demonstrating the braking force between an operating member 32 and a holding member 31, and second acting force (f2) directed backward away from the paper pipe 21 and demonstrating the braking force between the operating member 32 and the holding member 31, are given to both members 31, 32.
