A games system 150 and method includes a game application 160, a communications client application 110, a network interface 122 for receiving data from a remote user via a packet-based communication network, and processing means (not shown) for executing the game application and client application. The communication client establishes bidirectional video communications via the network interface and packet-based communication network, including receiving video data from a remote user. The game application comprises (i) image recognition software 172, 174, 176 programmed to receive the video data from the client application, recognise a predetermined image element in the received data, and track the motion of that element to generate motion tracking data, and (ii) game logic 164 programmed to control aspects of the game based on the motion tracking data. The games system may be a game console with an output for displaying game images on a television 100. The predetermined image element may comprise a bodily member of the user, or an implement held by the user, which is recognised and tracked by the image recognition software to generate the motion tracking data. The communication client may establish the video communications via a peer-to-peer connection, preferably via the internet 120. |
