A joint for connecting oil-filled cables 16, 161 comprises two hollow insulators 4, 41 which receive the cable ends 15, 151, terminals 7, 71 extending through the facing end walls of the insulators and connected to the bared conductors 17, 171 of the cables and being electrically connected by flexible conductors 12, a metal casing 1 which in conjunction with the insulators defines a gas tight insulation space 10 and whose end caps 2, 23 and 21, 231 form an oil-tight closure for the interior chambers 11 , 111 of insulators 4, 41 which are in communication with the oil jackets of the cables through ducts 22, 221 in terminals 7, 71. The casing is constructed to permit access to the assembled joint, e.g. as shown cylindrical portion 1 when unbolted can be slid to the right. Alternatively (Fig. 2, not shown) one casing may have a detachable lid. A metal screen around the jointing zone consists of two parts 13a, 13b held by springs 14, 141. The unsheathed cores 18, 181 of the cables within chambers 11, 111 have reinforcing tubes 19, 191 of oil impregnated paper provided with stress cones 20, 201 electrically connected to the cable sheaths. Space 10 is filled with insulating gas e.g. sulphur hexafluoride by itself or mixed with other electronegative gases or inert gases, through valves 26a. Connections 25, 251 communicating with chambers 11, 111 may be plugged, connected to a feed tank or to each other so that the joint functions as a stop joint, feed joint or straight through joint respectively. The joint may be non-linear, e.g. curved.
