Polymethylbenzenes, e.g. xylenes, 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene and 1,2,3,5-tetramethylbenzene, are isomerized in the presence of a shaped catalyst comprising silica-alumina and molybdenum which has been exposed to a hydrogen pressure of at least 100 p.s.i.g., heated in the presence of hydrogen to 650-850‹ F. and maintained at this temperature in the presence of hydrogen for at least 16 hours; the isomerization being carried out under conditions comprising a selected temperature in the range 500-850‹ F. and as low as possible within this range consistent with production of a selected level of desired isomer, a pressure of 100-700 p.s.i.g., a feed rate of 0À1-10 liquid v./v./hour, and a hydrogen to polymethyl mole ratio of 2:1 to 20:1. |
