Alcohols and ketones are prepared by the oxidation of saturated hydrocarbons using an oxidizing gas containing molecular oxygen, in the presence of a boron compound, wherein the oxidation product is thereafter hydrolysed and the obtained alcohol is separated, said process comprising using as the boron compound a mixture of 1-60% of orthoboric acid with 99-40% of metaboric acid: The orthoboric acid content may be provided by treating with a dehydrated orthoboric acid the water-containing organic liquid phase obtained by condensing the gaseous effluent from the oxidation zone, and then recycling the resulting mixture to the oxidation zone. Examples disclose the oxidation of cyclohexane to cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone and the oxidation of n-octane to a mixture of octanols and octanones.
