A radar or sonar system amplifies the signal received by an antenna (31) of the radar system or a transducer of the sonar system is amplified and then subject to linear demodulation by a linear receiver. One or more look-up tables may be used to control an amplifier in order to compensate for range-dependent variations in the amplitude of return signals. A separate LUT, or a region within a LUT, may be associated with each range. The amplifier may have multiple gain stages, each controlled by a LUT or LUT region, or multiple outputs from LUTs or regions may be added and subject to saturation logic. |
