The system (1) has a frontal detection sensor (7) for detecting a vehicle preceding another vehicle that is equipped with the system. A calculation unit determines an engine torque set point (Co) optimizing fuel consumption, from an engine torque set point (Cc) desired by a driver and variables representing rolling environment obtained from the frontal detection sensor. A selection unit (6) selects a final engine torque set point to be applied among the determined set point and the set point desired by the driver. An independent claim is also included for method for controlling engine torque of a motor vehicle for optimizing fuel consumption of the vehicle.
