A split stuffing box 8 mounted within the unsplit inner casing 4 of a double casing steam turbine has an internal annular channel 9 receiving live steam from inlet pipes 4a through passages 9a and delivering through a split nozzle ring 11 mounted within the stuffing box 8 to the turbine live steam stages 14. The nozzle ring 11 is supported in a groove (23), Fig. 2 (not shown), in the stuffing box and is retained with freedom for expansion by a disc 12 and screws 13. The stuffing box is located intermediate the turbine live and reheated steam stages 14, 16, respectively, by bolts 6 passing through inner casing 4 and engaging a groove 27. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), a portion (8a) of the stuffing box is separate from the remainder of the box and is retained by bolts (21). Bores (22), Fig. 4 (not shown), may be provided to tap off a small quantity of steam from the channel 9 to an annular groove (28) in the outer surface of the stuffing box 8 and thus reduce thermal stresses. In a further modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), for partial admission operation, radial partitions divide the channel 9 into a series of part-annular sections and an annular slot (26) is cut in the box 8 to reduce distortion. |
