[Also in Divisions B2, B6 and C4] A laminate comprises a sheet or film of a propylene polymer coated on at least one surface with silicon monoxide and then with a top coat by application of an aqueous dispersion of an alkali metal silicate, boric acid and aluminium, zinc, aluminium oxide or hydroxide. The aqueous dispersion may comprise by weight of the dry ingredients 15 to 75% alkali metal silicate, up to 4% boric acid, and 22 to 76% aluminium, zinc, aluminium oxide or hydroxide, laminated to wood, plastics, fibreboard, or metal. The propylene polymer which may be polypropylene or a copolymer with ethylene or butene-1, may be blended with polyisobutylene, cis-polyisoprene, ethylene-propylene-cyclopentadiene terpolymers, or styrene copolymers with butadiene, acrylonitrile or methyl methacrylate. The silicon monoxide may be applied by vacuum deposition. The aqueous dispersion may also contain zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, antimonous sulphide, phosphoric acid, aluminium orthophosphate or a carboxylated butadiene - styrene copolymer. The particle size of the aluminium, zinc, zinc oxide, aluminium oxide or hydroxide, titanium dioxide, or antimonous sulphide may be less than 10 microns. The top coat may contain abrasive particles of silicon carbide, diamonds, garnet, emery or flint may be included in the top coat. The aqueous dispersion may be applied by spraying, dipping, brushing, curtain coating or trailing blade coating, and is suitably 0À1 mil. to 5 mils. thick. The top coat may be sealed by dipping into an aqueous alkali metal silicate solution, draining, and dipping into saturated aqueous boric acid solution. The top coat may be cured by heating.</p> |
