A method of increasing the number of different locking combinations that can be made available in locks in which a rotatable inner cylinder is contained in a stationary outer cylinder and radial bores extending from the outer cylinder into the inner cylinder slidably contain two part locking pins which prevent the inner cylinder from being rotated unless they are displaced into predetermined positions by a key provided with recesses in its sides for displacing the locking pins into the positions, which method comprises varying the relative spacing of the locking pins in the direction of the axis of the cylinder, the axial distance of the first locking pin from the abutment face for the inserted key on the end face of the inner cylinder, and the radial distance from the circumferential surface of the inner cylinder of one end of the channel for receiving the key. A key to operate the lock has a row of equally spaced recesses extending along each longitudinal half of each side face commencing at different distances from the abutment of the key with the cylinder. A master key has a series of grooves on transverse lines of each key face.
