A filling and venting device for filling the cell of a battery to the desired level includes a moulded sleeve 17 (Fig. 3) mounted for sliding movement in a bore in the lid 14 of the battery between a first position in which the cell of the battery is closed to the atmosphere, other than through the bore of the sleeve 17, and the inner end of the sleeve is at a fixed distance below the desired electrolyte level in the cell, and a second position in which the cell is open to the atmosphere, the sleeve comprising a tapered portion 22 which engages lid 14 in the first position to seal the cell from the atmosphere, a rib 18 which engages the lid 14 in the second position to prevent the sleeve entering too far into the cell and flutes 23 which vent the cell to the atmosphere in the second position, and a cover 24 which when replaced over channel 15 in lid 14 moves sleeve 17 from the first position to the second position and vice versa when removed. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, ribs 27 on spigots 25 depending from cover 24 engage rib 18 to push sleeve 17 into its second position whilst rib 26 engages shoulder 21 in sleeve 17 to move it into its 1st position after which flexing of spigot 25 enables rib 26 to disengage and be withdrawn as the cover is removed leaving sleeve 17 wedged in the narrower portion of bore 16. In other embodiments the vents in sleeve 17 are in the form of holes or of a pair of opposed flat surfaces (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown). Electrolyte is added via trough 15 until sleeves 17 are full when cover 24 is replaced venting the cells and allowing electrolyte to flow from sleeves 17 into the cells, filling them to the desired level.</p> |
