The method involves detecting locking of a motor vehicle from outside of the vehicle so as to prohibit starting of an engine of the vehicle, where the vehicle is provided with a handsfree system for accessing and starting the engine and protected against unauthorized starting. Unlocking of the vehicle from outside of the vehicle is detected by detecting an unlocking request of the vehicle from a center server connected to the vehicle through a telephonic network. The vehicle is contacted by backup procedure of the handsfree system when unlocking of the vehicle is not detected. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a system for securing a motor vehicle against theft (2) a computer program product comprising a set of instructions for implementing a method for securing a motor vehicle against theft.
