The method involves determining instantaneous heating power to be produced for a coolant accomplishing a set point temperature. The power is compared with a power threshold, and an operating mode for a coolant flow heating device is determined based on a comparison result of the power with the power threshold. The coolant is jointly heated by a heat pump (1) and a complementary heating unit such as a boiler (20) and electric resistors, in a mixed operating mode in the device, where the heat pump transfers calories from a cold source towards heating circuits (3, 4).
