<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control apparatus for an automatic transmission and a control method for the automatic transmission improving fuel economy of a vehicle by executing neutral control during vehicle stop. Ž<P>SOLUTION: When neutral control start conditions are satisfied, an ECU executes a second neutral control process if first target fluid pressure KPc1 is stored in an EEPROM. Namely, the ECU reduces first working fluid pressure Pc1 supplied to a fluid pressure servo to the first target fluid pressure KPc1 (from first timing t21 to second timing t22). Then, the ECU reduces the first working fluid pressure Pc1 by set pressure Poff (from third timing t23 to fourth timing t24).
