<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a transflective type liquid crystal display device capable of expanding a visual field angle not only in transmission display in a transmission part but also in reflection display in a reflection part. <P>SOLUTION: In the liquid crystal display device of an ECB (Electrically Controlled Birefringence) mode of a linearly polarized light initiative type including a liquid crystal display panel LPN wherein a liquid crystal layer LQ is held between an array substrate AR and a counter substrate CT, a backlight BL illuminating the liquid crystal display panel from the array substrate side, a first polarizing plate PL1 disposed between the liquid crystal display panel and the backlight, and a second polarizing plate PL2 disposed on the counter substrate side of the liquid crystal display panel, a first retardation plate RF1 is provided, which is disposed between the liquid crystal display panel and the first polarizing plate or between the liquid crystal display panel and the second polarizing plate and has an in-plane retardation Re nearly equal to a residual retardation R in the liquid crystal layer of the liquid crystal display panel and whose delay phase axis is disposed so as to be orthogonal to an alignment direction of liquid crystal molecules included in the liquid crystal layer. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT |
