<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a retardation film which serves as an optical film useful for compensation of the visual characteristics of a liquid crystal display having practical characteristics such as heat resistance and mechanical strength, comprises fine particles having negative optical anisotropy and a transparent polymer and, preferably in particular, has a three-dimensional refractive index satisfying the relation: nx<ny≤nz or nx≤ny<nz, wherein nx presents a refractive index of the advancing axis direction in the film surface, ny presents a refractive index perpendicular to the advancing direction in the film surface and nz presents a refractive index in the thickness direction of the film. <P>SOLUTION: The retardation film comprises: at least one kind of fine particles having negative optical anisotropy, in particular, assuming a rod, needle or spindle shape, having an aspect ratio of 1.5 or more and having an average particle size of 500 nm or less; and a transparent polymer. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT |
