The present invention relates to photovoltaic dye cells, also known as dye-sensitized solar cells, for producing electricity from sunlight, and more particularly, to a monolithic photovoltaic dye cell assembly having reduced ion migration in intercell seals, and a method of operating such a dye cell assembly. The invention uses an imposed voltage field to prevent or reduce iodine migration between adjacent cells. Within the polymer sealant layer (7) between adjacent cells are embedded two electrodes, i.e., conductive elements (20) and (25), typically in the form of wires or strips. Each of these conductive elements may be coated with a porous, insulating coating (30) to prevent short-circuiting (between wires and/or between wires and transparent, electrically conductive layer (2)).
