What is proposed is a sound generator (10) for generating sound with a pre-determined frequency spectrum, comprising a membrane (16) with a moving core (18), an actuator (14) acting on the moving core (18) to deflect the membrane (16), and a driver stage (40) for controlling the actuator (14) by way of an electric switching means (38). The sound generator (10) is characterized in that it comprises a sensor (48) for detecting the motion of the moving core (18) in a non-contacting fashion and for sending a signal to the driver stage (40) as soon as the moving core (18) has reached a specific deflection position (50) in order to deactivate the actuator (14) by opening the electric switching means (38).
