The method involves precise identification of variables (3) in another automation system (2) by identifying characteristics, which is built hierarchically and it has a system specific path name and names of the variables. The variable is made available by an automation system (1). The individual components of the identifying characteristics are separated from each other by a separation characteristic. An independent claim is also included for a system for utilization of the variable of an automation system in another automation system.
