The method involves sucking air from an exhaust manifold with the help of an expansion movement of a piston (3) in a cylinder (2) by an opened outlet valve (6). The sucked air is compressed into a suction tube (4) with the help of a compression movement of the piston in the cylinder by an opened inlet valve (5). An internal combustion engine (1) i.e. petrol engine, is started in a starting process, where fuel is injected into the suction tube and an air-/fuel mixture is introduced into the cylinder and ignited in the cylinder, during the starting process. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a control unit for starting a combustion engine (2) computer program comprising a set of instructions for performing a method for starting a combustion engine.
