PURPOSE: A liquid crystal display and a control method thereof are provided to reduce the number of photo-sensor and simplify a control algorithm by compensating a white color coordinate on the CIE1931 color coordinate. CONSTITUTION: A backlight unit of a liquid crystal display includes a backlight(153), a backlight driving unit(152), a light sensing unit(154), and a back light control unit(151). The backlight radiates white light to a liquid crystal panel by including a plurality of R LEDs, G LEDs, and B LEDs. The backlight driving unit drives LEDs by including a R LED driving part(152a), a G LED driving part(152b), and B LED driving part(152c). The light sensing unit senses R color amount information and B color amount information included in the white light.
