The method involves regulating output speed of an internal combustion engine (12) to a target speed using a regulating device (46) during a shifting process of an automatic transmission i.e. double clutch transmission (14), where the output speed is the speed before execution of the shifting process and the target speed is the speed after the execution of the shifting process. Regulating characteristics of the regulating device is determined depending on whether the shifting process is an upshift or a downshift and whether the shifting process is a traction shift or an overrun shift. An independent claim is also included for a control device for controlling a drive train of a motor vehicle.
