<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus and an image reading method, capable of reducing the storage capacity of a storage means for storing shading correction data, while suppressing the deterioration in image quality. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus includes: an image sensor formed by stacking a plurality of sensor units each having a plurality of light-receiving elements; a storage means for storing first class shading correction data for each of the sensor units, as shading correction data whose number is smaller than the number of the light-receiving elements of each of the sensor units; and a correcting means for correcting, for each of the sensor units, pixel data outputted from the light-emitting elements whose number is larger than the number of the first class shading correction data, based on the first class shading correction data.
