<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing apparatus and method comprising an outline processing function for achieving both of maintenance of appropriate image quality of outline data and suppression of unwanted expansion in file size, which are contrary to each other. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In outline processing, a standardization coefficient is determined, in accordance with a change amount between coordinate values, such that a value output as outline data is approximately matched to a maximum value in the specific number of digits. Thus, image quality (character readability) of outline data can always be enhanced to a peak value in the specified number of digits without being affected by a target character size.
