PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simple method for producing a zinc oxide single crystal having a sufficiently low lithium concentration and a high degree of crystallinity. SOLUTION: It is possible to obtain a zinc oxide single crystal having an intracrystalline lithium concentration of 5×1,014 atoms/cm<SP>3</SP>or smaller and a half width value of 50 s or shorter as measured by X-ray locking curve analysis in (0002) face reflection by growing a zinc oxide crystal by a hydrothermal synthesis method using a solution of a lithium concentration of 1 ppm (weight base) or lower under conditions in which the crystal growth temperature is suppressed within a variation width of 5°C or it is set at 300-370°C.
