A high speed flywheel system (2 ), comprising a flywheel (3) mounted on a shaft (4), the flywheel being located within an evacuated chamber (S) within a housing (5), wherein the chamber(d) is sealed by seals comprising a cavity (20, 22) containing sealing fluid, wherein the seal cavity (20, 22) can be topped up with sealing fluid from a reservoir (24), the reservoir having an aperture open to the atmosphere for pressure equalisation, the flywheel housing (5) being mounted on the shaft (4) via a bearing arrangement (12) comprising at least one bearing(12) situated externally to the chamber (6).
